The sky is the limit! Know that you can
This epigraph does not need an exclamation point, and here’s why
. The traditional New Year’s testing test Etsunengeyko (Japanese: 越年稽古) took place in Kyiv on December 27, 2021. Just as the heroes of the movie “Enjoy Your Bath” go to the bathhouse with friends on December 31, so practitioners of Japanese hand-to-hand combat Nippon Kempo at the end of the year attend the final festive annual training session of Etsunengeiko, where they take the annual Shiken test (試験).

This is a tough test, an intense workout that gets stronger year after year
. After all, at each such training, participants must do a total number of repetitions of exercises equal to the number of the year: this year they had to do 2022 repetitions! It’s not easy.
At Etsunengeyko-2022, students of Kyiv Nippon Kempo clubs totaling 56 people were present. Only physically strong adults can afford such a load: the youngest participant was 21 years old, and the oldest was 73. And this test was passed!

How does Etsunengeiko usually take place? Regular students of “deshi” (Japanese: 弟子), who feel that they are ready for such a load, senior students of “senpai” (Japanese: 先輩) and sensei are allowed to attend the training
. New Year’s training in Japanese hand-to-hand combat is different from regular classes. Students come to the dojo early, carry out daisoji (jap. 大掃除) (general cleaning of the dojo), create New Year’s decorations for the hall “Kadamatsu to Shimegi kazari” (jap. 門松と標飾).

The test begins with general mokuso meditation (Japanese: 只管打坐)
. Next – a mandatory warm-up and everyone begins taking the Siken New Year’s test, which lasts from one and a half to two hours without a break!

Usually everyone passes the continuous test, but for those students who feel unwell, a short rest is allowed, followed by a return to completing tasks
. Upon completion of the test, participants receive certificates of passing the Sotsugioshikiya Test (卒業式や).
In the evening, usually, according to tradition, the final Sayonara party takes place on this day, where they sum up the results of the outgoing year, thank each other and wish each other success in their achievements on the path of “Budo”.

The main goal of practitioners of Japanese hand-to-hand combat Nippon Kempo is spiritual and physical self-improvement
. It is difficult to overestimate the importance of health, strong immunity and physical training, especially during various pandemics.
Those who have completed Siken can be confident in their health. Our life is a continuous chain of various tests and exams, and now another test has been passed. This day is another achievement for each participant! A worthy end to the past, and a great start to the New Year 2022!
