to be perfect means to change often.
Etsunengeiko (Japanese: 越年稽古) – the final lesson, the final, much more intense than usual, training on New Year’s Eve, one of the traditions in Nippon Kempo
. For the first time in Ukraine, New Year’s training was held in 2012. And now for the ninth time such a final test session was held in Kyiv.

What is Etsunengeiko
The characters 越年– sound like “etsunen” and mean “to celebrate the New Year.” The word geiko, denoted by the characters 稽古, is closely related to the character “genkyu” (Japanese 研究) – to study
. The concept of geiko does not simply refer to an exercise in technique or physical fitness, but characterizes the development of the personality of a person involved in martial arts. If a person does not reflect (jitoku), he will not realize the essence of geiko.

The true essence lies in the ability to realize the potential inherent in the exercise through constant self-challenge
. Geiko is the foundation upon which the development of the shin spirit and the ability to control ki energy are based in the martial arts of Budo. Any geiko requires the right and necessary Hibi-shoshin (Japanese: 日々初心), the crystal-clear mind of a beginner who desires to learn more and more every day. The main goals in geiko are Taiiku (Japanese: 体育) – physical fitness and Tokuiku – moral, ethical, or spiritual growth. It’s like forging character. It’s not athletic training to the point of exhaustion and near-fainting. It’s self-cultivation, Shugyo (修行), when you skillfully apply your mind to achieve a spiritual goal, acquiring an unclouded consciousness, Munen muso (無念無想), “action without thought, without intention,” and an open heart, Makoto (誠), and the unwavering spirit of Fudoshin (Japanese: 不動心). This is none other than the unity of mind and spirit, found in true Heihosha (Japanese: 兵法者), or one whole. True unity of mind and spirit is a state of complete selflessness and intense focus on one thing.
Etsunengeiko is impossible without conducting a Shiken (Japanese: 試験) challenge, test or test.
How Etsunengeiko 2021 went
This year, students took a test consisting of a technical test and physical conditioning exercises
. The basis of the test was 32 forms from “Nippon kenpo hakugeki no katachi san ju ni katachi”. The exercises combined single striking techniques in protective equipment bogu, as well as fighting techniques in pairs. The total number of exercises performed without any breaks was equal to 2021 repetitions, traditionally in honor of the New Year 2021. Four Kyiv dojos took part in the test: “Tsuri”, “Zanshin”, “Falcon” and “Sokil”. The total number of participants, including both men and women, was about fifty people.
Etsunengeyko 2021 was held in 2 groups: in the morning…
The students were able to test themselves and their spirit, evaluate the capabilities of their preparation under extremely intense physical activity.
… and in the evening
Unfortunately, in the past year 2020, due to lockdowns and quarantines, we were unable to complete all planned activities. But, nevertheless, some part of what was planned was still carried out, this is Gashuku 2020 and this New Year’s test Etsunengeyko 2021. We hope that in The new year 2021 will have the opportunity to hold more interesting and significant events for those involved in Japanese hand-to-hand combat Nippon Kempo.

. We wish you to continue self-improvement no matter what the circumstances.
